No subject has fascinated the human race so often and for so long as inquiries into the nature of leaders and leadership. Egyptian Hieroglyphics for leader and leadership appeared more than 5,000 years ago. Greek epics including the Iliad and the Odyssey are virtual case studies of the perils and potentials of leadership. During the Renaissance, Machiavelli warned in The Prince in 1513 that �There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct or more uncertain in its success that to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things.�

Many people are interested in becoming leaders, however it is the always the few that are committed to leading that make the difference. Leaders have the ability to develop a vision, the skill to articulate that vision in practical terms, and the skill to direct and assist others in executing the various aspects of that unknown. Leaders are usually remarkably people just like the rest of us � the difference is that they learned the skills and techniques of leadership responsibilities in their organizations. If you don�t feel you were born with the full set of leadership tools, don�t despair � Neither was anyone else. Leaders often emerge in times of crisis in response to the circumstance of the moment. There is no stereotype of the perfect leader.

Leadership Tips:

1. Leaders are not necessarily born. They are made, and usually self-made.
2. No one is a leader in all circumstances. Expect leadership talent, including your own, to emerge in some circumstances and to take a back seat in others.
3. Avoid the temptation of being the �Fiery Leader.� It doesn�t work anymore. You don�t lead through intensity and intimidation, it backfires on all concerned.
4. Take on all the roles that leadership requires to build your organization.
5. The vision of your organization will be determined and enhanced by words and actions that keep an inspiring and believable future clearly in the minds of your teammates. Create a crystal-clear vision of where you are going.

       Traits of a Leader

A leader is trusted. A leader takes the initiative. �Carpe Diem,� Latin for �seize the day� has always been a fundamental tenet of leadership.

Good judgment is also critical to good leadership. Good judgment is not just evident in success, it can also be found in defeat and disappointment.

A leader speaks with authority. It is required that leaders have sufficient self esteem and confidence in what they say so that potential followers will be convinced. The best way to persuade people is to speak with authority (posture), and to �talk to and with people,� not at them. If the authority is matched with knowledge, wisdom and conviction then the odds of successful leadership are greatly enhanced.

A leader strengthens others and a good leader does not seek to impose his or her attitudes or solutions on others. A leader provides the support or guidance that prompts others to have confidence in their abilities and decision making. Leaders learn to trust their own intuition and teach others how to develop this quality as well.

A leader remains optimistic and enthusiastic because to lead, the thought process will always be �the glass is half full, not half empty.� Attitudes are infectious; optimism and enthusiasm overcome the greatest challenges. Leadership is about influence in ways and manners that develop you and others to be the best they can be. Managers manage, but leaders lead, and lead by example. You are blazing a trail, crying out on your journey, �I give inspiration and assistance!� Good leaders give both.
